EV charger in Deerfield
By Michael Stryszowski, licensed electrician · Updated
A dedicated car charger in a Deerfield garage — neat, labeled, and ready for daily use.

The situation
This is a dedicated car charger we installed in a Deerfield garage. The car was already in the driveway. The panel was the question. That is how charger jobs start on this shore — not with a box on the wall, with a look at the service.
Deerfield is about ten minutes from the Northbrook shop. Post-war subdivisions and later houses, attached garages, and a lot of 100-amp panels that were never asked to run a Level 2 charger, a range, and a dryer at once. We are ICC Certified EV Charging Installers and ChargePoint Certified. We do not hang a charger on a service that cannot take it.
The homeowner wanted the charger neat, labeled, and ready for daily use. Not a cord across the walk. Not a receptacle that was never the right rating. Deerfield garages are usually attached, which makes the run shorter than a detached barn — and still long enough that we measure it instead of guessing.

Scope and approach
We look at the panel, the meter, and the path to the parking spot. If there is room for a dedicated circuit, we install listed equipment, label the breaker, and leave it ready. If the service is still 60- or 100-amp, we say so before anyone opens a wall. When an upgrade is the right work, we pull the permit and price it separately.
Hardwired is cleaner in a finished garage. A plug-in unit is fine when the receptacle is the right rating and location. Tesla/NACS, ChargePoint, and other listed equipment are all in play — we install listed gear the panel can actually support.
- Look at the panel, meter, and run to the garage
- Say whether the service can take a dedicated circuit
- Pull the Village of Deerfield permit when the job needs one
- Install listed charger equipment and label the breaker
- Leave it ready for daily use — not a cord across the walk
Materials and brands
Listed Level 2 equipment. The unit on this job was what the homeowner brought or asked us to source. We do not name a charger model here that we cannot stand behind on this page. ChargePoint Certified for ChargePoint equipment; ICC Certified EV Charging Installer for the circuit and the install. Wire, breaker, and disconnect are sized to the unit and the code.
A 48-amp charger on a panel that cannot take it is not a deal. It is a callback. We say no when the service says no.
Permits and code
The Village of Deerfield wants dedicated EV circuits inspected. We pull the permit and meet the inspector. Building Department handles residential electrical permits. A charger is not a weekend Amazon install on this shore — it is a licensed-electrician job with a labeled breaker.
Timeline and result
If the panel can take a dedicated circuit and the path is open, a charger is often a scheduled visit. If the service has to be upgraded first, that is a permitted job with an inspection date. We tell you which calendar you are on before we start. Northbrook, Highland Park, and Glenview garages are the same look. Call (847) 778-8053.
